Maloney hits milestone in loss to Middlebury

Senior midfielder Grace Maloney became the ninth player in program history to record 100 career goals, but Colorado College dropped an 18-6 decision to No. 7 Middlebury College on Wednesday afternoon at Stewart Field.

Maloney, who led the Tigers with three goals and a pair of assists, also climbed to No. 9 on CC's career points list with 138.

Unfortunately, the Panthers balance proved too much to overcome.

Thirteen different players found the net at least once for Middlebury, including senior attacker Elizabeth Garry who struck for three goals and set up two others.

“We liked how we played and we liked our offensive sets,” head coach Missy Foote said. “We're still early in our season so we were ironing out a number of things. I feel like it came together today.”

Garry had a stick in four first-half goals as the Panthers opened up a 6-0 lead with 10:32 remaining before the break.

CC 's deficit would have been bigger had in not been for the efforts of junior goalkeeper Abby Fink, who made 14 of her 15 saves during the first 30 minutes.

The Tigers finally got on the board when Maloney scored a man-up goal with 1:08 remaining in the first half, but 12 turnovers kept her team from keeping pace with Middlebury.

Any thoughts of a come-from-behind victory were dashed early in the second half when junior defender Neile Weeks and freshman midfielder Katie Ritter scored 18 seconds apart. Junior attacker Emma Kramer found the net a little more than four minutes later to give the Panthers a 9-1 lead with 21:36 remaining.

Senior attacker Leslie Jacoby added Colorado College's second tally off a perfect feed from Maloney, but Middlebury again answered with three consecutive markers.

After falling behind 15-3 with 6:38 to play, sophomore attacker Madeline Scherer, Jacoby and Maloney scored during a 3-1 run as the Tigers fought back to get within 16-6 with 1:08 to go.

“We didn't play 45 minutes of the game,” said CC head coach Susan Stuart. “I would like to see us play them a full 60 minutes. Are they a good team? Yes. But so are we and we didn't show it today.”

Middlebury finished with a 35-16 advantage in total shots and a 20-14 edge in ground balls.

The Tigers also had a difficult time solving senior goalie Lily Nguyen, who finished with five saves in 53:36 between the pipes and didn't allow a goal on eight free-position attempts.

The Panthers also created a territorial advantage by winning the first 12 draw controls and 18 out of 26 for the contest.

Maloney led Colorado College with three goals and a pair of assists.

Middlebury improved to 6-0, while the Tigers slipped to 7-1.

CC returns to Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference action on Saturday when it plays host to Birmingham-Southern College in the final home game of the regular season.
