Women's Soccer Weekly Release No. 3>
After three consecutive games against in-state rivals, Colorado College plays host to the University of Utah in a rare Thursday afternoon game at 4 p.m., and then travels to Provo, Utah, to square off with BYU under the lights at South Field on Saturday at 7 p.m.
The Tigers enter Thursday's contest with a 1-0-2 record after playing to a 2-2 tie at the University of Northern Colorado last Friday. The Tigers have 0-0-1 records both at home and on the road. CC's 1-0 victory over the University of Denver occurred at a neutral site.
The Utes improved to 2-1 with a 1-0 victory against arch-rival BYU on Saturday, March 25. The Utah is 2-0 at home, but 0-1 on the road. The Cougars take a 2-1 record into Thursday's home opener against Long Beach State. Their first three games all were decided by one goal.
Colorado College won both previous meetings against Utah, outscoring the Utes 8-0 in those contests. The Tigers recorded a 5-0 victory at Stewart Field in 1995 and a 3-0 triumph in Salt Lake City in 2010. In the only official contest between the schools, CC defeated BYU, 3-1, in 1995. In an exhibition game last year in Colorado Springs, the Cougars scored in the 80th minute to take a 2-1 decision.
Sophomore forward
Jessie Ayers paces the offense (1g/1a) and is second with 11 shots. Senior forward
Brittney Lyman and junior forward
Lynn Froetscher also have found the net for the Tigers. Freshman
Kate Scheele has played all 310 minutes in goal, posting a 0.58 goals-against average and a .833 saves percentage. She is the first rookie to open with back-to-back shutouts since 2005.
Lyman became the 13th player in CC history to reach the 20-goal plateau when her header off a cross from junior defender
Sarah Haizlip found the net in the 52nd minute at Northern Colorado. She also moved into a tie for 19th place on the program's all-time points list with 44. Lyman holds the CC record for goals in a single game with five against UTEP on Oct. 30, 2009.
Junior defender
Kecia Morway, who played two years at the University of Notre Dame, is one of two newcomers and three Tigers overall to play all 310 minutes so far in 2012. Senior midfielder
Hannah Peterson and Scheele are the other two. Three freshmen –
Kendall Kultgen,
Carina Lauzon and
Alexis Long – have appeared in two of three games.
The following week, CC begins its celebration of National Youth Soccer Month with a four-game home stand that begins on Friday, Sept. 7, against Bryant University. Robert Morris University visits Stewart Field for the first time on Sept. 9.
