Colorado College falls at BYU

Box Score Playing in one of the most difficult environments in the country, Colorado College suffered its first loss of the 2012 campaign with a 2-0 setback at BYU on Saturday night.

The Tigers fell behind for just the second time this season when senior forward Jessica Ringwood put the Cougars on the board in the 16th minute off a feed from senior forward Carlee Payne Holmoe.

The CC offense struggled to create scoring chances against BYU's physical defense, but sophomore midfielder Kaeli Vandersluis nearly tied the game in the 32nd minute on a direct kick that junior goalkeeper Erica Owens stopped inches below the crossbar. Owens finished with two saves.

After weather delayed the start of the second half, sophomore forward Jaiden Thornock doubled the Cougar's lead in the 47th minute. Her perfectly-placed crossing shot from 35 yards out on the left side barely eluded freshman goalkeeper Kate Scheele's fingertips.

Scheele kept Colorado College in the game by making a season-high 10 saves, several of which were highlight-reel worthy.

She denied Thornock's shot from the left edge of the box with a diving save in the 48th minute, and then made a toe stop on Thornock with 7:27 remaining.

BYU, which finished with a 21-4 advantage in total shots, became just the fifth team to score more than one goal against the Tigers in the last 17 games.

CC slipped to 1-1-3 overall, while the Cougars improved to 4-1-0.

Colorado College begins a four-game home stand next weekend when Bryant University and Robert Morris University make their first-ever appearance at Stewart Field on Friday and Sunday, respectively.
