Box Score Wasting a 23-point performance by junior guard
Ryan Milne, Colorado College put its back up against the wall on Friday.
The Tigers dropped a 68-52 decision to Trinity University, a team they beat twice earlier in the season, and saw their hopes for an SCAC regular-season title dwindle to a flicker. They can still tie for the crown and earn the No. 1 seed for the league's post-season tournament, but it will take a victory at Southwestern University and a Trinty loss to the University of Dallas on Sunday to create that scenario.
With Friday's victory, TU took over sole possession of first place with an 11-3 record in league play, while CC dropped to second at 10-4.
Milne made 9 of 22 shots from the field, including five of 15 attempts from three-point range. He also dished out a team-high six assists and grabbed five rebounds to aid the defense.
A 42-25 halftime deficit simply was too much to overcome for CC, which outscored Trinity by a 27-26 margin after the intermission.
Sophomore forward
Chris Lesnansky, who finished with seven points, hit a layup to pull Colorado College to within a point, at 19-18, with just over eight minutes left in the first half. But Trinity's Robert Kitzinger struck back 26 seconds later with a jumper to help ignite a 23-7 run to the buzzer for the home team, which improved to 17-7 overall.
Foul trouble plagued CC during those first 20 minutes, as Trinity went to the line 20 times and hit 14 of the charity tosses.
The Tigers, who were awarded only four free throws before the break, went on a 19-10 run of their own to pull within eight points early in the second half. Freshman
Justin Berardino, who joining senior
Ian Rewoldt with six points apiece in the loss, scored half of them by draining a shot from long range that ignited the surge.
That was as close as CC could get, however.
Lesnansky added a team-high eight rebounds. Kitzinger led Trinity with 23 points and grabbed seven rebounds, while Heath Hopson scored 14 points and matched Lesnancky's eight efforts off the boards.
Colorado College, 14-10, meets Southwestern University at 2 p.m.Sunday in Georgetown, Texas.
