Ryan Milne's 50-foot buzzer beater gave Colorado College a 64-62 victory over Southwestern University in the regular-season finale on Sunday afternoon.
Unfortunately, Trinity University had already clinched the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference crown with a 65-61 home-court triumph over the University of Dallas on Saturday.
CC, 15-10 overall and 11-4 in league play, finished one game behind Trinity (18-7, 12-3) in the standings and will head into next weekend's SCAC playoffs as the No. 2 seed. That does mean a first-round bye for the post-season tournament, which begins Friday at Austin College in Sherman, Texas.
Milne hit eight of 15 shots from the field, including four of eight from behind the arc to pace all players with 21 points in Sunday's contest. The junior guard also dished out four assists and grabbed three steals. His game-winning shot came just moments after the Pirates overcame a 17-point deficit to take a 62-61 lead on Michael Cantu's layup with six seconds remaining.
Colorado College held a 30-24 edge at intermission and continued to build upon its cushion when sophomore
Chris Lesnansky ignited a 15-4 run to open the second half. The surge gave the visitors their largest lead of the game, at 45-28, with 13:53 left.
Southwestern struck back when Chase Kocher hit a jumper to begin a 24-8 run that gave the Pirates a lead for the first time in the second half with 5:43 remaining on the clock.
CC battled back to grab a 61-58 lead with under a minute left, but the Pirates' Sean Myers hit a layup to pull within one point with 46 seconds remaining.
The Tigers called timeout with 19 seconds left, but Southwestern's Travis Kurtz blocked a shot to give his team possession five ticks later.
Lesnansky and junior
Jake Tramutolo aided CC's offense with 12 and 11 points, respectively. Lesnansky led the team with nine rebounds, while senior
Ian Rewoldt grabbed eight boards.
Kocher led Southwestern (10-15, 6-9 SCAC) with 19 points, four rebounds and four assists. Josh Mann also scored in double figures with 10 points.
Colorado College will play the winner of the No.3/No. 6 seed match at 7 p.m. on Saturday in Hughey Gymnasium.
