After posting a 6-3 victory over the same opponent two weeks earlier at home, Colorado College was in for an unpleasant surprise on Saturday.
The Tigers, hopeful of reaching the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference championship match for the first time, suffered an 8-1 defeat to Southwestern University in the SCAC semifinals in San Antonio, Texas.
Sophomore
Mary Edman and junior
Katie Patterson outdueled Southwestern's Aimee Blake and Elizabeth Elliss, claiming an 8-5 triumph at No. 1 doubles, but that was CC's only highlight of the contest.
Of the team's six singles players, only junior
Caila Criss managed to win a game, toughing out a 7-5 win between a pair of 6-2 setbacks in the No. 4 slot.
Maddy Bush, playing at No. 2 in place of Katie Patetrson, battled hard in her opening game before dropping a 7-5 decision and succumbing 6-0 in Game 2.
The Tigers, 7-7, had an opportunity to finish their season with a winning record by beating fifth-seeded Centenary College in the consolation bracket on Sunday.
