Edman rises to occasion for CC

Sophomore No. 1 player prevails in late singles match to help Tigers avert shutout

While her Colorado College teammates could only try desperately to battle from behind on Saturday, Mary Edman merely needed to reach deep and seize back some momentum.

Edman's 6-4, 3-6, 10-5 triumph at No. 1 singles helped the Tigers avoid being shut out in an 8-1 loss to Mesa State University at CC's Burghart Courts. After dropping her second set to CMU's Kaylee Davis, the sophomore from Saratoga, Calif., realized it was time toughen up mentally.

"I decided to settle down and just start making the shots that I made while winning the first game,” Edman said after finishing off Davis. "I made too many mistakes in that second set. I just needed to play cleaner, stop giving away points and let my game speak for itself."

Up to that point, the NCAA Division II visitors from Grand Junction had their way with CC, taking straight-set victories in the other five singles matches after sweeping the doubles competition, where Davis and partner Shannon McNamara earlier made quick work of Edman and Katie Patterson by an 8-3 count at No. 1.

Colorado College's Maddie Bush and Maggie Harwood rallied from an early 4-1 deficit and had a chance to pull within 6-5 by holding serve in the 11th game. But, after five deuce points, Kristin Wykert and Schyler Nelson prevailed for the Mavericks and went on to win 8-4 at No. 2. And, at No. 3, CC's Caroline Cary and Caila Criss kept things much closer before falling 9-7.

"These were really competive matches today," said Edman, who squared her singles record for the season at 4-4 while the team dropped to 3-6 overall. "They just didn't go our way."

Other than her success at No. 1, the next closest singles match came at No. 4 where Mesa State's Rachel McLaughlin outdueled junior Criss in the first set, 6-4, before taking the second by a score of 6-1.

The Tigers resume action at home next week with matches on Saturday against Southwestern University and Sunday vs. Hastings College.
