Schreiner shoots down Tigers

Box Score Sophomore guard Justin Berardino tied his career high with 19 points, but Schreiner University outscored No. 25 Colorado College 21-10 during the final five minutes to pull away for a 71-58 victory on Friday night at Edington Gymnasium.

The Mountaineers, who improved to 8-7 overall, took over sole possession of first place in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference standings with a 4-0 record in league play. CC, which slipped to 9-3 overall, is tied for second place with Trinity at 3-1.

Schreiner used torrid long-range shooting, connecting on 10 of 21 three-point attempts, and didn't have to contend with Colorado College junior forward Chris Lesnansky, who played only 22 minutes due to foul trouble.

The Tigers' second-leading scorer, who came into the night averaging 18.6 points per game, was called for three fouls in the first half and fouled out with 1:03 to go.

CC trailed 50-48 after freshman forward Mitch Carter knocked down a short jumper for two of his 13 points with 5:44 to play. However, that was as close as his team would get.

Colorado College closed to within 62-56 after senior guard Ryan Milne sank a pair of free throws with 1:40 remaining, but Schreiner tallied nine of the next 11 points at the charity stripe to close out the contest.

The Mountaineers led 25-18 with four minutes remaining in the first half, but Berardino scored six points during a 10-0 run that gave the Tigers a 28-25 lead after 20 minutes.

Milne finished with 12 points, three steals and a pair of assists. Carter grabbed a team-high six rebounds.

Stevan Guerrero paced the Mountaineers with 16 points and seven rebounds, while AJ Myres and Maverick Harris added 12 points apiece.

CC will have an opportunity to avenge the loss when the teams meet for the second time on Friday, Feb. 7, at Reid Gymnasium.

Colorado College returns to action on Saturday afternoon at Texas Lutheran University.
