Hendrix, Defense Fuel Victory Over Nevada

Box Score Quick thinking by junior forward Chanisse Hendrix and a dominating effort by the Colorado College back line proved to be the difference as the Tigers pulled away for a 3-0 victory over the University of Nevada on Sunday afternoon at Stewart Field.

CC, which improved to 9-4-3 overall and 5-2-1 in the Mountain West, is now tied for third in the conference standings with Utah State University.

Hendrix took advantage of a mistake by Wolf Pack goalkeeper Devyn Bryar, who picked up the ball in the box after she put it on the ground. Hendrix quickly realized what happened and knocked the indirect free kick off of Bryar and into the net for what proved to be her first career game winner.

"I saw the goalie put the ball down and I heard everyone yelling to go," Hendrix said. "It rolled just far enough for me to get to it. It feels good to get my first game winner."

A little less than 10 minutes later, junior defender Alexis Long doubled the Tigers' lead when she struck for her first goal of the season off of a corner kick by senior forward Rachel Herron.

It was just reward for Long, who anchored the Colorado College defense that recorded the team's sixth shutout of the season.

"I'll take the clean sheet any day," Long said about her preference between scoring a goal or blanking an opponent. "We already had a goal, so mine didn't really matter. But it's always nice to score. It was a perfect ball by Rachel and I saw it the whole way."

Herron closed out the scoring in the 80th minute by lofting a direct kick from 35 yards out into the top left corner. The Tigers have now outscored their opponents 20-10 in the second half of games this season.

"We've been getting goals from a lot of different players, which makes us hard to defend," head coach Geoff Bennett said. "We're getting better every game and our goal is to be playing our best at the end of the season."

At the other end of the pitch, CC's Rowan Fredericksen did not have to make a save while recording her fifth shutout of the year. It marked the first time the Tigers did not allow a shot on goal since Bennett took control of the program in 2004.

Colorado College posted a 23-3 advantage in total shots and a 5-3 edge in corner kicks.

Bryar stopped seven shots for the Wolf Pack, which slipped to 4-12-1 overall and 1-7-0 in league play.

"This was a typical Sunday conference game," Bennett said. "Nevada is much better than their position in the standings would indicate. They are well coached and played very hard. It goes to show how strong our conference is top to bottom."

CC travels to California for its final road games of the regular season. The Tigers visit San Jose State University on Friday, Oct. 24, and Fresno State on Sunday, Oct. 26.
