Tigers Fall to Whitman at CC Classic

Box Score Freshman Malia Shappell scored a game-high 15 points but it wasn't enough Saturday as Colorado College dropped a 77-55 decision to Whitman College on the final day of the CC Thanksgiving Basketball Classic at Reid Gymnasium.
 
Emily Rommel and Heather Johns each scored 14 points for Whitman, which improved to 3-2 this season. Rommel was a perfect 6-for-6 from the field in the first half as the Missionaries held a 33-16 lead at the break. Rommel finished the game 7-for-7 and Johns was 5-for-10. Whitman shot 48.5 percent (32-for-66) from the field for the game.
 
Chelsi Brewer added 10 points and Katie Gray grabbed a game-high eight rebounds for Whitman, which outrebounded the Tigers, 47-34, and had 20 on the offensive end. The Missionaries led wire-to-wire and held its biggest lead, 67-37, after a layup by Alysse Ketner with 6:50 remaining in the second half.
 
Shappell scored nine of her points following that as Colorado College (0-7) cut the lead to 21 a couple of times. The Tigers shot just 20.8 percent (5-of-24) in the first half and finished the game at 32.7 percent (17-for 52). Sophomore Korbyn Ukasick had 12 points for CC and junior Danielle Davis led the team with six rebounds and four assists. Shappell and sophomore Christina Bowman each pulled down five rebounds.
 
The Tigers travel to Tacoma, Wash., next weekend for the Pacific Northwest Tournament. They will play Pacific Lutheran on Friday, Dec. 5, and Puget Sound on Saturday, Dec. 6.
 
In Saturday's opening game, Karla Vietinghoff hit a jumper from the right elbow with 13 seconds remaining to give Iowa Wesleyan a 49-48 victory over Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology. Vietinghoff led all scorers with 18 points, followed by teammate Lauren Grubb, who had 13 points on 5-of-7 shooting. Vietinghoff also had a game-high four steals.
 
Kristen Belyea led Rose-Hulman with 12 points on 4-of-7 shooting from three-point range, while Gracie Gibbs had eight points and pulled down a game-high nine rebounds.
