Box Score Senior midfielder
Elise Burchard struck for three goals during a decisive 8-0 run as Colorado College rallied from a three-goal second-half deficit to defeat Albright College, 22-16, on Monday afternoon at Stewart Field.
Â
It marked the fifth time this season CC has scored 20 or more goals in a game, and the Tigers needed almost all of them to cage the Lions. After building a 17-12 cushion with 10:04 remaining, they allowed Albright pulled to within 18-16 on Amanda Smith's seventh and final tally with 6:21 to play.
Â
Colorado College sealed the victory with the final four goals, two of which came off the stick of
Mary Taussig. The freshman midfielder was a force at both ends of the field, recording a season-high five goals and seven points. She also posted seven ground balls, four draw controls and caused a pair of turnovers on defense.
Â
"This was our first test where we played as a team and battled back successfully," head coach
Susan Stuart said. "Everyone stepped up after we fell behind and it was a great team victory."
Â
The combined 36 goals were the most since a 24-16 loss at UC Davis on April 25, 2004.
Â
Albright won 15 of 25 draw controls and made the most of those opportunities by scoring six times. After falling behind 4-0 during the opening 11:50, The Lions roared back to take their first lead four minutes into the second half on Meghan Wilson's second tally.
Â
Markers by Erin Farrell and Lexi Garapola gave Albright a 12-9 lead with 23:25 to play, but after a timeout, the Tigers exploded for eight goals in a little more than 10 minutes.
Â
After scoring six goals during the first half for the Lions, Smith found scoring opportunities harder to come by in the final 30 minutes.
Â
Tiger goaltender
Martha Smith made six of her seven saves during the second half, including three during a 5-0 run for Albright. She denied a pair of Smith shots from the right edge of the crease during the first three minutes, and then steered aside a free-position effort by Giuliana Rizzotti just after the Lions had taken an 11-10 lead.
Â
"Martha was outstanding in the second half," Stuart said. "She stopped at least three shots that could have given Albright a lot of momentum."
Â
Junior attacker
Virginia Logue set a career high with five goals, while Burchard matched her career best with four.
Â
Senior attacker
Madeline Scherer recorded two tallies and a pair of assists, while junior midfielder
Madeline Pitkin found the net twice.
Â
Senior defender
Sheridan Gribbon scooped up a career-high seven ground balls and had seven draw controls.
Â
"Our senior leadership was an important factor," Stuart said. "Sheridan played great. She is a spark plug for us on most days and she was outstanding today. Her goal was a great reward for her effort."
Â
CC finished with a 40-27 advantage in total shots and enjoyed a 32-19 margin in ground balls.
Â
Albright's Emily Hutson stopped 11 shots for the Lions, who slipped to 3-3.
Â
Colorado College (6-2) returns to action on Tuesday afternoon when it plays host to Morrisville State College at 4 p.m.
