Tigers drop heartbreaker to Denison

Box Score Senior attacker Maddie Scherer tied her career high with five goals, but Colorado College came out on the wrong side of a 13-12 decision against Denison University on Wednesday afternoon in a game that featured six ties and four lead changes.

Scherer gave the Tigers a 12-11 lead with 11:19 to play after she struck for back-to-back goals in a span of 32 seconds, but those were the last two shots CC would get past Big Red goaltender Laura Van Horn.

Sixty-two seconds after Molly Chapman tied the score on a free-position goal, Van Horn steered aside a shot by Scherer. Then, after Chapman struck for the go-ahead tally with 9:24 to play, Van Horn denied a pair of Mary Taussig shots six seconds apart.

After combining for 25 goals during the first 51 minutes, neither team could find the net during the final nine. After forcing a turnover with 24 seconds to play, the Tigers were unable to get a shot off against an aggressive Denison defense.

After Kelsey Wright gave the Big Red a 10-8 lead with 21:51 to play, freshmen Sadie Cole and Molly Lyons scored to knot the score at 10-10. Erin Keller's free-position marker put Denison ahead by one, only to see Scherer strike twice and give the Tigers their final lead.

Molly Lyons scored a season-high four goals for CC, while Dylan Voneiff and Sadie Cole added a goal and an assist apiece.

Taussig paced the defense with five ground balls, three draw controls and three caused turnovers. Kirby Leyshon forced three turnovers and grabbed three ground balls.

Sophomore goaltender Martha Smith tied her season high with seven saves.

Colorado College finished with a 34-23 advantage in total shots and a 25-18 edge in ground balls. The Big Red prevailed on 19 of 29 draw controls, six of which were won by Chapman.

Erin Keller, Clair Ludlow and Chapman had three goals apiece for Denison, which improved to 3-1.

The Tigers, who slipped to 6-3, play host to Morrisville State College on Thursday at 11 a.m.
