A pair of hard-fought victories at No. 1 and 3 doubles wasn't quite enough for Colorado College on Sunday.
The Tigers put up a tough battle, but in the end dropped a 6-3 decision at CSU-Pueblo despite several strong singles performances that would have made the difference in their favor.
The only CC player to prevail in singles was senior
Katie Patterson, who posted a 6-3, 6-2 triumph at No. 2.
Juniors
Mary Edman and
Maggie Harwood squeezed out a tight 10-9 (7-4) victory at No. 1 doubles while freshman
Gillian Hyde and sophomore
Caroline Cary defeated their opponents, 8-5, at No. 3.
Harwood and senior
Caila Criss, meanwhile, both went three sets in their singles matches before succumbing. Harwood took a close first set at No. 3 by a 7-5 count, but dropped the next two by identical 6-2 scores. Criss roared back from first-set loss to win the second, 6-4, but eventually fell in a 7-5 tiebreaker while suffering a 7-6 defeat in the third.
"We continue our stronger play at doubles where the women have done a tremendous job converting offensive situations and defending court positions," said Tigers head coach
Anthony Weber. "Once we have that same confidence in singles matches, the team will turn a corner.Â
"
Katie Patterson has done a great job in practice over the last few weeks, has continued to develop her serve into a weapon, and led the way in singles. Maggie (Harwood) and Caila (Criss) put up strong fights, but came up just short."
