Box Score BYU struck for a goal in the fifth minute and then took advantage of some fortunate breaks to record a 4-0 victory over Colorado College on Saturday night at South Field.
Senior forward Niki Fernandes scored on a deflection of an Elisabeth Phillips's shot off a corner kick in the fifth minute for the only goal the Cougars needed.
A little more than 17 minutes later, Fernandes picked up a second tally when she and a Tiger defender slid together and redirected a cross from sophomore forward Ashley Hatch into the net.
BYU caught its biggest break in the 40th minute when freshman goalkeeper
Rowan Frederiksen was unable to handle a service at the goal line and CC's clearing attempt bounced into the net for an own goal.
The Cougars added a penalty kick early in the second half to close out the scoring.
It marked the first time Colorado College allowed four since a 4-1 loss to North Carolina State on Sept. 4, 2011, at the University of Pittsburgh Invitational, a span of 66 games.
BYU (4-3-2) finished with a 20-10 advantage in total shots, including a 10-4 edge in shots on target. Each team attempted six corner kicks.
Frederiksen turned aside six shots for the Tigers, who slipped to 4-2-2.
Senior Katherine Snyder made two saves during the first half to earn the victory in goal.
Freshman Hannah Clark stopped two shots, including a diving save on a blast by junior midfielder
Sarah Schweiss in the 87th minute to preserve the shutout.
CC plays host to its first conference game as a member of the Mountain West when Utah State University visits Stewart Field on Friday, Sept. 26. Kickoff for that contest has been moved up to 1 p.m.
