Senior midfielder
Kaeli Vandersluis set up freshman midfielder
Maddi Dunn's first career tally in the 30th minute, and then struck for what proved to be her sixth career game winner with 25:18 remaining in the second half.
"It felt really good that we were able to get on the board first," Vandersluis said. "I struggled a little during the first 15 minutes, but I was able to get around the defender and get the ball to Maddi.
"It's always taken me a while to get going. It's kind of a trend. I'm glad to finally get a goal and we'll take the win and move forward."
With a goal and an assist, Vandersluis climbed into sole possession of 12th place with 56 career points and she tied Tiffany Brown (2007-10) for 11th place with 16 career assists.
Senior midfielder
Jessie Ayers added a pair of goals a little less than four minutes apart. She converted on a penalty kick for her first tally of the year, and then capped the scoring by collecting a pass from sophomore forward
Chanisse Hendrix to send a crossing shot into the net from nine yards away on the left side.
With a pair of markers, Ayers climbed into sole possession of seventh place on the program's career list with 26. She also moved past Maryclaire Robinson (1986-89) for 10th place on the all-time points list with 58.
Senior defender
Jordan Savold ignited the four-goal outburst when her cross from the left corner found the right side of the net for her first career tally.
"You have to look at is objectively," head coach
Geoff Bennett said. "We scored on a penalty and we scored on two crosses. Were they great goals? No. We were due a little luck and that was returned to us today.
"Overall, it's got to be better from a maturity standpoint, from who we are and what we're trying to be. We expect 90 minutes of quality, and we didn't get that today. That was a little bit disappointing."
There was no luck involved at the defensive end, where CC kept the Wildcats at bay for 75 minutes
Freshman goalkeeper
Rowan Frederiksen extended her scoreless streak to 262:45, making a pair of saves before giving way to junior
Heather Seeley with 14:23 to play.Â
"Rowan didn't have to do too much today, and that's a credit to our back line," Bennett said. "I thought our defenders did a good job and Weber State never really got behind us. Rowan didn't have to make big saves like she did the other night. Today we took the pressure off her, which was nice."
Lana Willard and Brecken Holbrook scored for WSU during the final 12:30.
"I was impressed with how Weber State battled with us today," Bennett said. "That's a good team and they made things difficult for us. It's no surprise they were in the NCAA Tournament last year."
In the first game of the day, Marquette University overcame an early 1-0 deficit to record a 2-1 victory over the University of New Mexico.
"Marquette is going to be a great challenge for us on Sunday," Bennett said. "They are going to press the tempo, make things difficult for us athletically, and test us technically. Marquette might be our biggest test up to this point in the season, so we'll see how we handle it."
