CC Aims to Defend Top Spot In Mountain West

Colorado College aims to defend sole possession of first place in the Mountain West when Fresno State and San Jose State University visit Stewart Field this week. CC plays host to the Bulldogs on Thursday, Oct. 8, at 3 p.m., then SJSU on Sunday at noon.
 
The Tigers leveled their season record at 6-6-1 and improved to 4-0-0 in league play with a pair of overtime victories last week. Colorado College defeated Colorado State University, 1-0, on Friday, and then stunned the University of Wyoming, 2-1, on Sunday. CC improved to 4-5-0 at home with its third win in the last four contests at Stewart Field.
 
Fresno State is 2-8-1 overall and 1-2-1 in conference play after splitting a pair of home games last week. The Bulldogs dropped a 3-2 decision to Utah State University on Friday, but rebounded for a 4-1 victory over Boise State University on Sunday. Fresno State is 1-4-1 on the road this season.
 
San Jose State takes a 5-5-2 overall record and a 3-1-0 MW record into Thursday's game at Air Force. The Spartans, who currently are 4-2-1 on the road this year, split a pair of home games last week. SJSU posted a 2-1 overtime victory against Boise State on Friday, but dropped a 1-0 decision to Utah State on Sunday. 
 
Senior midfielder Sarah Schweiss, espnW's National Player of the Week, leads the Tigers with six goals and 14 points, and is tied for second with a pair of assists. Freshman midfielder Lauren Milliet is second with three goals and eight points, while freshman midfielder Rae Conlon has a team-high three assists.
 
Sophomore goalkeeper Louisa Mackenzie has played all 1212:49 in goal and owns a .760 saves percentage along with a 1.34 goals-against average. The back line is anchored by seniors Samantha Curran and Alexis Long.
 
Colorado College's freshmen and sophomores have combined for seven of the team's 13 goals, eight of 12 assists and 22 of 38 points. Eleven underclassmen have been in the starting lineup during CC's first 13 matches. Mackenzie, Milliet and freshman Madison Tominello have started every game.
 
For the second week in a row, Schweiss was named the MW Offensive Player of the Week. The Tiger captain has factored in five of the team's six game-winning goals this season, scoring four and setting up one. She now has 10 career game winners and seven game-winning assists.
 
Schweiss currently is riding a career-long four-game goal-scoring streak and notched the game winner in each of those contests. Schweiss currently is 11th in program history with 23 career goals, 12th with 59 points and tied for 16th with 13 assists.
 
Ten of Colorado College's 13 games have been decided by one goal or less this season. With five consecutive one-goal victories, the Tigers are now 6-3-1 in those contests. CC has gone to overtime five on five occasions and now is 2-2-1 in extra time after recording back-to-back wins over Colorado State and Wyoming.
 
Colorado College hits the road for the first time Since Sept. 27 when the Tigers visit Boise State University on Friday, Oct. 16, and Utah State University on Sunday, Oct. 18. The following week, CC returns home for its final home matches of the season against the University of New Mexico and San Diego State University on Oct. 23 and 25, respectively.

CSU is 3-6-2 overall and 0-1-1 in conference play after tying Fresno State, 2-2, and falling to San Jose State University, 2-0, last week. The Rams are 2-3-0 on the road this season.
 
Wyoming is 5-2-3 overall and 1-1-0 in the league after splitting its first MW contests at home last week. The Cowgirls dropped a 1-0 overtime decision to San Jose State on Friday, but bounced back to defeat Fresno State, 3-0, on Sunday. Wyoming, which plays at Air Force on Friday, is 0-1-3 on the road this year.
 
Colorado College defeated Colorado State, 3-2, last year in Fort Collins in the first meeting as Division I rivals. CC owns a 7-1-0 all-time record against Wyoming, which includes a perfect 2-0-0 mark at home. The Tigers look to avenge a last year's 3-2 overtime loss in Laramie.

Colorado College concludes its four-game Mountain West home stand against Fresno State on Thursday, Oct. 8, and San Jose State on Sunday, Oct. 11. The following week, the Tigers hit the road for contests at Boise State University and Utah State University on Oct. 16 and 18, respectively.
