The Colorado College men's tennis team put up a good fight on Sunday but dropped a 9-0 decision to Division II Metro State in Denver. The Tigers fell to 3-10 this season while the Roadrunners, ranked No. 6 regionally, improved to 12-9.
Â
Metro State swept the three doubles matches, led by the No. 1 duo of Josh Graetz and Nick Baker, who defeated senior
Jack Burger and sophomore
Jason Gutierrez, 8-3.
Â
In singles play, Metro won five of the six contests in straight sets. The only match to go the distance was at the No. 5 spot, where junior
Ross Sherman lost the first set to Trevor Jones, 6-4, but rallied to win the second-set tiebreak 7-5 before falling 11-9 in the third-set super tiebreak.
Â
Senior
Taylor Delehanty extended John Qualls to a pair of tiebreaks at the No. 4 position but fell 7-6(3), 7-6(2).
Â
"Ross found a way to fight off the wind and push his match to a third set today," CC head coach
Anthony Weber said. "Taylor also continued his surge and was just a few points from pulling out a set or two."
Â
The Tigers play the first of four matches against Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) opponents on Thursday, April 16 against Southwestern University in Georgetown, Texas.
