The Colorado College women's tennis team won two of the three doubles matches and four of the six singles contests Thursday to capture its Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference opener, 6-3, over Southwestern University in Georgetown, Texas.
Â
Colorado College (6-7, 1-0 SCAC) jumped out to an early 2-1 lead after the doubles matches. Senior
Mary Edman and freshman
Fiona Cerf won the No. 1 match, 8-6, over Nicole Wilson and Kali Rose while freshmen
Natalia Dellavalle and
Anna Smith defeated Maranda Kahl and Virginia Stofer, 8-5, at the No. 3 spot. The Tigers nearly swept the doubles, but senior
Maggie Harwood and sophomore
Maddie Cahill-Sanidas fell in a tiebreak at No. 2.
Â
CC kept its momentum in singles play by winning at the top four spots. Cerf improved to 9-3 at the No. 1 position this season with a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Julie Swets, while Edman cruised past Marieke Visser, 6-1, 6-0 at the No. 2 spot. Dellavalle picked up a 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 3 over Wilson and Harwood pulled out a 6-3, 5-7, 6-2 victory over Rose at No. 4.
Â
This was our best team performance of the spring," CC head coach
Anthony Weber said. "Natalia and Anna played a very smart doubles match, toting that line of playing aggressive at the net and patiently setting up points at the baseline. Mary played one of her best matches of the spring and got off the court quick. Â Most importantly, everyone competed hard mentally and physically."
Â
The Tigers return to action on Saturday, April 18 against Schreiner University in Kerrville, Texas. The match is scheduled to begin at 10:30 a.m. (CT).
