The Colorado College women's tennis team advanced to the finals of the 2015 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships with an impressive 5-2 victory over Schreiner University in the semifinals on Saturday in Georgetown, Texas. CC, the third-seed at the tournament, will face top-seed and 31
st-ranked Trinity University in the finals on Sunday, April 26, beginning at 9 a.m. (CT).
Â
The Tigers, who lost to Schreiner 5-4 last Saturday, took a 2-1 lead by winning the top two doubles matches and never looked back. Senior
Mary Edman and freshman
Fiona Cerf won at the No. 1 spot for the 10th time in their last 11 matches and improved to 14-3 this season with a hard-fought 8-6 victory over Leanna Haynes and Camila Anguiano. Meanwhile, senior
Maggie Harwood and sophomore
Maddie Cahill-Sanidas avenged their loss last Saturday at the No. 2 position to Abby Knedlik and Karyn Swink with an 8-3 triumph over the Schreiner duo today.
Â
"We played much better in doubles today and it gave us tremendous confidence in the singles matches," CC head coach
Anthony Weber said. "We're hoping this puts us in position for a regional ranking."
Â
Edman handled Alex Wheeler with ease, 6-1, 6-3, at the No. 2 singles spot to give CC a 3-1 lead. Anguiano then downed Harwood, 6-1, 6-4, at No. 4 to cut the Tiger lead to 3-2, but freshman
Natalia Dellavalle and Cahill-Sanidas captured the No. 3 and No. 5 match, respectively, almost simultaneously to clinch the match for CC (9-8). Dellavalle defeated Swink, 6-3, 6-1, and Cahill-Sanidas downed Kelsey Buczkowski, 6-1, 6-4.
