Highlights
C.J. Smith scored twice in the first period and Tyler Wall made 29 saves to lead seventh-ranked UMass-Lowell past Colorado College, 4-0, Saturday night at the Broadmoor World Arena.
Â
Wall's best save of the night may have come in the first 30 seconds of the contest when he stoned CC's
Alex Berardinelli on a breakaway chance. Despite outshooting the River Hawks, 29-26, the Tigers didn't get many more great chances, though both senior
Luc Gerdes and junior
Teemu Kivihalme each hit the pipe later in the game.
Â
Smith put Lowell on the board at the 2:14 mark with a power-play goal after knocking home a rebound in front past CC goalie Alex Leclerc. Smith then notched his second PPG of the period at the 15:45 mark.
Â
UMass-Lowell scored twice in the second period as well. Dylan Zink capitalized on a defensive error and scored on an odd-man rush at the 14:27 mark, then Mattias Goransson scored the final goal of the evening during a delayed penalty with 3:15 left in the period.
Â
Leclerc made 13 saves in the first two periods before giving way to senior
Derek Shatzer, who saved all nine shots he saw in the final 20 minutes.
Â
The Tigers struggled on special teams again Saturday, going 0-for-6 on the power play and allowing Lowell to go 2-for-6 with an extra man. Berardinelli led all players with five shots, followed by Gerdes and Kivihalme with four apiece.
Â
"We were flat and inconsistent at times tonight," CC head coach
Mike Haviland said. "If we score on the breakaway early it may have given us some life, but we had to create our own energy tonight but we did not show a lot of emotion."
Â
The Tigers complete their season-opening six-game streak against Hockey East opponents next weekend with games at Boston College on Friday, Oct. 21, and New Hampshire on Saturday, Oct. 22.
