Box Score John Hatch,
Eric Houska and
Chris Martin each had career games to power the Colorado College men's basketball team to an 88-82 overtime victory against Augsburg College on Friday night at Reid Arena.
Â
CC's junior captains combined for 62 points, 24 rebounds and 17 points as the Tigers opened the 2016 Rocky Mountain Thanksgiving Classic with their first win of the season.
Colorado College took a six-point lead with 1:08 to go in overtime when Houska drove the left side of the lane and dished to
John Hatch for the easy basket in the paint. The Tigers sealed the victory by going 8-for-8 from the free-throw line during the final 44 seconds.
Â
"As they go, we go," head coach
Andy Partee said. "It's going to come with some pressure and they are going to be the focus of many of our opponents. They have to be resilient and deliver, and I was proud to see them fight from behind and pull out a victory in overtime."
Â
Hatch poured in a career-high 27 points, including six during the extra session.
Â
Martin scored 19 points and completed his double-double with a career-high 12 rebounds, while Houska dished out a career-best 14 assists and added 16 points.
Â
The 14 assists ties Houska for sixth place on CC's single-game list.
Â
"John and Chris were absolutely incredible today," Houska said. "We would be nowhere close to this win had they not stepped up the way they did. It was good to be at home and get everyone involved."
Â
Colorado College led 50-39 when Martin slammed home a pass from Houska two minutes into the second half, but Augustana battled back and took the lead on a three-pointer from senior guard Richie Perea with 13:15 to play.
Â
Sophomore guard Kevin McKiernan gave the Auggies a 74-71 lead when he nailed a three-pointer from the left wing with 45 seconds remaining in regulation, however CC sophomore guard
Jake Miller knotted the score 16 seconds later with a trey from the left corner.
Â
"People in the arena will say that shot was big for this game, I'll say it was big for Jake's confidence," Partee said. "Coming off the bench, he needs that confidence. He's our best ball handler, but he just found out how he can impact our program."
Â
After the teams traded buckets during the first minute of overtime, Hatch and Houska went to work and gave the Tigers an 80-76 lead and Augustana never recovered.
Â
Senior guard Chuckie Smith paved the Auggies with 26 points, while Colorado Springs native Perea added 14.
Â
Both teams used big runs to open or overcome large deficits during the first half.
Â
Augsburg grabbed an early 13-6 lead after Smith sank three free throws after drawing a foul on a three-pointer from the right wing.
Â
The Tigers responded with a 22-4 run and took an 11-point advantage when junior swingman
Ryan Young dialed long distance with 8:16 remaining in the first half.
Â
A layup by junior forward Colin Olmscheid out the Auggies up by a point with 1:52 to play, but CC scored the next 10 points to build a 43-34 lead after 20 minutes.
Â
In the first game of the day, junior forward Tyler Weiss scored 15 points to lead five players in double figures as Saint John's University pulled away for a 76-64 victory over Willamette University.
Â
