Box Score Saint John's University used a 25-7 run during the latter stages of the second half to pull away for an 82-55 victory over Colorado College in the final game of the 2016 Rocky Mountain Thanksgiving Classic.
Junior guard Patrick Strom, who was named the tournament MVP, led the Johnnies with 22 points, while junior forward Tyler Weiss added 20 points and five rebounds to earn a spot on the all-classic team.
The Tigers were led by junior guard
Eric Houska, who finished with 15 points and seven assists. Junior forward
John Hatch added 11 points for CC, which slipped to 1-4 on the season.
Colorado College led early in the contest, the last time being when Houska scored on a layup 7:04 into the contest.
SJU took a 27-21 lead when Weiss scored two of his 20 points with 3:09 remaining in the first half, but CC knotted the score at 37-37 when junior winger
Ryan Young hit one of two free
throws with just 2:25 expired after the break.
The Johnnies built a 13-point lead with 8:57 to go, and after Colorado College got to within nine points, closed out the game by scoring 25 of the final 32 points.
In the first game of the day, junior forward Collin Olmscheid poured in a game-high 27 points to lead Augsburg College to an 85-73 victory over Willamette University.
Senior guard Richie Perea and junior guard Harry Sonie added 19 points apiece for the Auggies, who improved to 1-3 overall and 1-1 in the tournament.
Junior winger Casey Thornton led the Bearcats with 17 points and eight rebounds. Willamette slipped to 1-4 overall and 0-2 on the weekend.
CC returns to action on Monday when it makes the short trip across town to play CU-Colorado Springs at 7 p.m.
