CC Opens Spring Season Against DI Opponents

The Colorado College women's tennis team opened its 2016 spring season Saturday on the road against Division I opponents Northern Colorado and Colorado State. The Tigers dropped both matches by a 7-0 score, but gained some valuable experience against Division I opponents.

"For our first day of competition this spring, we got some great match play in," head coach Anthony Weber said. "Our doubles is at least where we finished last spring, and I saw positive signs of improvement in our court coverage and movement patterns."

Sophomore Fiona Cerf played well in both matches, especially in the nightcap against CSU, taking Laia Hernandez Soler to the limit before falling 7-6, 7-5 at the No. 1 position.

"Fiona has been working very hard in practice and it showed," Weber said. "Even though she lost 6-1, 6-0 against UNC, she played well thought out points. To bounce back the way she did against CSU is a testament to having that year of experience under her belt."

Cerf and freshman Kendal McGinnis fell 6-4 to Northern Colorado in the No. 1 doubles match, while sophomore Natalia Dellavalle played well at the No. 3 singles spot, but fell to Hilary Waters-West, 6-3, 7-5.

The Tigers return to action next Friday, Feb. 26 against Colorado Christian University in Lakewood, Colo.
