Angry Tigers Take A Bite Out of George Fox

Box Score Seething from the loss of sophomore midfielder Steph Kelly to the first two yellow cards of her career, Colorado College turned its frustration into goals and cruised to a 21-9 victory at George Fox University on Friday afternoon.

Junior attackers Annie DeFrino and Lily Benjamin produced seven points apiece as the Tigers improved to 11-2 with their sixth consecutive victory.

DeFrino recorded a game-high six goals, giving her a team-leading 44 for the season. That total ties her for 10th place on the program's single-season chart with Sarah Blair (1999) and Emily Walker (1997).

Junior midfielder Mary Taussig finished with four goals and an assist, while Kelly added one score and set up three others in a little more than 20 minutes.

Kelly set the program's single-season record with her 30th assist, surpassing Mary Everett's total of 29 set in 1999. With her 66th point, Kelly climbed into a tie with Helen Sneath (2004) for ninth on the single-season chart.

"Our players did a really nice job of maintaining their composure," head coach Susan Stuart said. "They adjusted to the officiating and competed at an even higher level. They played extra clean and extra careful with very little contact during the last 40 minutes."

Senior goaltender Martha Smith made five of her six saves during the first half, including a huge stop on senior midfielder Alexa Nakashimada exactly one minute after the senior midfielder knotted the score at 4-4.

Thirty-five seconds later, CC turned that save into a tally by DeFrino that ignited an 8-1 run and put the Tigers up 12-5 after 30 minutes.

Smith's best save occurred with 7:10 to play in the second half when she denied a shot by sophomore attacker Jess Hanson at the edge of the crease.

"Those were big plays and momentum shifters," Stuart said. "When you deny an opponent on a one-on-one situation, it fires everybody up. Martha played a great game."

DeFrino and Kelly combined on the tally that put Colorado College ahead to stay, and after the teams traded goals by Taussig and Hanson, Kelly ignited the six goal run that put the Tigers in complete control.

After Nakashimada scored 57 seconds into the second half, the Tigers ran off five consecutive markers to build a 17-6 cushion with 18:43 to play.

Miranda Edwords began and finished a 3-1 surge that allowed the Bruins to pull to within nine, but Colorado College answered with goals by Taussig, Emily Carlson and Natalie Shishido during the final five minutes to close out the scoring.

Despite being at least one player down for nearly 10 minutes, CC finished the game with a 45-17 advantage in total shots and a 17-12 edge in ground balls.

Junior goaltender Mikaela Easterlin produced 12 saves for the Bruins, who slipped to 7-4.

The Tigers are idle until April 30 when they face Concordia University of Wisconsin in Rock Island, Ill., at Augustana College.
