The Colorado College women's tennis team dropped a 5-3 decision to Southwestern University Saturday in the semifinals of the 2016 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships.
The second-seeded Pirates (21-4) won two of the three doubles matchups to take an early 2-1 advantage. Maranda Kahl and Nicole Wilson defeated junior
Maddie Cahill-Sanidas and sophomore
Natalia Dellavalle, 8-4, at No. 3 to open the match. After sophomore
Fiona Cerf and freshman
Kendal McGinnis won the No. 1 match, 8-2, SU's No. 2 team of Taite Drews-Jones and Jessey Martinez edged freshmen
Annie Zlevor and
Simone Hall, 8-6.
CC (12-9) evened things at 2-2 when Drews-Jones retired at the No. 1 match against Cerf. The Pirates took a 3-2 lead when Martinez posted a 6-0, 6-4 victory over freshman
Madison Doerre.
Once again, the Tigers squared the match as Dellavalle defeated Swets, 7-5, 6-3, at No. 3, but Southwestern received a three-set victory by Anna Schneemann over McGinnis, 6-2, 6-7, 6-2 at the No. 2 spot and Wilson clinched it for Southwestern as she rallied for a 2-6, 6-4, 6-0 triumph over Zlevor at No. 5.
