Tigers Score Convincing Win at Pomona-Pitzer

Box Score Colorado College could not have picked a better day to record its most convincing victory of the season.

The Tigers solidified their position as the top team in the West Region with an impressive 16-8 road triumph at Pomona-Pitzer Colleges' South Athletics Complex.

Competing for the second time in less than 24 hours, CC improved to 8-2 overall and 7-1 against opponents from the west.

Junior midfielder Mary Taussig tied her season high of five goals during the first half, all on free-position shots. Her first four tallies gave Colorado College a 4-1 lead 11:57 into the contest and the Tigers never looked back.

After CC freshman attacker Nikki Blair and Pomona's Rebecca Long traded scores, markers by Steph Kelly and Taussig gave the Tigers their largest lead of the first half at 7-2.

Long scored the final two goals during a 3-1 surge that saw Pomona trim its deficit to three, but Colorado College sophomore attacker Annie DeFrino found the net with 70 seconds remaining in the first half to give her team a 9-5 cushion at halftime.

A pair of Kelly markers gave the Tigers an 11-5 lead, and after Long scored the last of her four goals, the sophomore attacker struck again to restore CC's six-goal advantage with a little more than 24 minutes to play.

The Sagehens pulled to within 12-8 on tallies by Aubrey Douglass and Sarah Markowitz, but those were the last two goals that Martha Smith and the Colorado College defense would allow.

Blair struck for three of her season-high four goals in a span of 3:21 to give the Tigers a 15-8 lead, and Sadie Cole closed out the scoring with a little more than 13 minutes to play.

Taussig led CC with six ground balls, four draw controls and a pair of caused turnovers.

Kelly, who finished with five points, recorded nine draw controls and six ground balls.

Colorado College finished with a 36-19 advantage in total shots and a 24-19 edge in ground balls. The Tigers also won 18 of 26 draw controls.

Gaby Fukumura stopped 13 shots for Pomona-Pitzer, which slipped to 9-2.

CC will take an 11-day break before returning to action on April 14 with games against Pacific University and Linfield College in Oregon.
