Tigers Ace Final at Augustana

Box Score There's no longer a debate about which team deserves to be atop the NCAA West Region Rankings.

Colorado College utilized a dominating second-half performance at both ends of the field to defeat Augustana College, 20-13, in a showdown of the two top teams in the region.

With their second decisive victory over a regionally-ranked opponent in two days, the Tigers completed the regular season with 13-2 record and an 8-1 mark on the road.

"Our schedule had us prepared going into this game," head coach Susan Stuart said. "We have learned to play our game instead of focusing on what our opponents try to do.

"Our experience on the road negates a lot of the home field advantage we face, and playing tough regional and national competition gave us a lot of looks at different styles of play."

In a contest that featured nine ties and eight lead changes, the Vikings held a 13-11 lead after senior attacker Rebecca Pollard scored with 25:08 remaining. That, however, proved to be the final time Augustana would find the net.

"We showed great resiliency when Augustana made their runs," Stuart said. "We kept our composure and stuck to the game plan, which is why we played so well during the second half."

Junior midfielder Mary Taussig ignited CC's comeback when she converted on a free-position shot with 22:20 to play.

Freshman attacker Nikki Blair tied the game with her third goal a little less than five minutes later, and then sophomore attacker Annie DeFrino gave the Tigers a lead they would not surrender with 14:45 to play.

After Taussig gave Colorado College a two-goal cushion with 11:31 to go, DeFrino struck twice in a span of less than two minutes to give the Tigers a 17-13 lead with 7:30 on the clock.

DeFrino, who finished with five markers, became the first CC player to reach the 50-goal plateau since Madeleine Scherer notched 60 in 2014.

Steph Kelly, who tied her single-game high of 10 points first set during yesterday's 24-6 thrashing of Concordia University Wisconsin, broke the program's single-season record of 84 points set by Mary Everett in 1999 when she scored with 6:37 to play. Colorado College's sophomore attacker finished the game with 86 points.

Kelly recorded her eighth assist of the contest when she set up junior attacker Lily Benjamin's fourth goal with 5:39 remaining, and then Benjamin notched her team's 20th marker when she found the net with 19 seconds left.

The junior attacker tied her season highs with five goals, two assists and seven points.

"We had a great team performance today with contributions from every player on our roster," Stuart said. "We battled a very tough opponent for 60 minutes and I am proud of our ability to fight as a unit through every play."

The Tigers finished with a 43-29 advantage in total shots and a 31-25 edge in ground balls.

Senior goaltender Martha Smith made four of her five saves during the first half when neither team led by more than two goals.

Junior midfielder Sadie Cole led the CC defense with three caused turnovers, three ground balls and four draw controls.

Starting goaltender Jenna Hoffman stopped four shots during the first half for Augustana, which slipped to 15-2. Sophomore Analia Fowler recorded eight saves during the final 30 minutes.

Junior midfielder Olivia Mayer led the Vikings with five goals, while senior attacker Emily Handrahan recorded a goal and four assists.

With their eighth consecutive victory, the last seven of which occurred on the road, the Tigers tied the 2004, 2011 and 2014 squads for second place in program history with 13 wins in a single-season. The 2012 team holds the record with 15 victories.

The brackets for the 2016 NCAA Division III Women's Lacrosse Championship will be announced on Sunday, May 8.
