Sadie Cole struck for a pair of goals and became the third current Tiger to record 100 or more in her career as the Colorado College women's lacrosse team kicked off its five-game home stand with a 22-4 victory over Chapman University on Tuesday afternoon.
CC improved to 8-0 on the season and picked up an important victory over a West Region rival.
"It was a dominating performance," head coach
Susan Stuart said. "We know the importance of regional games in our quest for another NCAA Tournament appearance. Chapman will do very well in the SCIAC, which is the strongest conference in our region."
As a team, the Tigers tied their season high for goals in a game and surpassed the 20-goal mark for the sixth time in eight contests.
Cole joined teammates
Mary Taussig (104) and
Annie DeFrino (106) as members of the program's Century Club.
As usual, she was a force at both ends of the field, contributing six draw controls and a ground ball.
"Sadie is a great player and leader," Stuart said. "Clearly is she extremely talented, but she brings a fire to the field that is palpable. We ask a great deal of our big players and Sadie is one of them.
"Sadie and
Mary Taussig are team players who understand our strength is in numbers, not individuals."
DeFrino, a junior attacker, led CC's offense with four goals and a pair of assists. Junior attacker
Steph Kelly added two goals and a team-high three assists, while senior attacker
Lily Benjamin scored twice and added a pair of helpers.
Seniors
Hannah Lyons,
Natalie Shishido and Taussig, and freshmen
Robin Hilderman and
Lauren Pejza also scored twice for the Tigers.
Colorado College struck for three goals in the opening 2:11 and led 4-0 before junior midfielder Becka Wachtel put the Panthers on the board a little more than five minutes into the game.
"Our players rose to the occasion," Stuart said. "They came out of the gate fast and executed our game plan to perfection."
DeFrino scored what proved to be the game-winning goal with 22:21 remaining in the first half and the relentless Tigers led 11-1 when Benjamin scored for the second time with a little more than 10 minutes to play before halftime.
Senior midfielder Kelsey Mackin's second tally with 10 seconds remaining in the first half trimmed Chapman's deficit to 13-4, but that proved to be the Panthers' final goal of the game.
The Tiger defense, which did not allow a goal in the second half, held an opponent to fewer than five goals for the fourth time this season and lowered its season goals-against average to 6.38.
"We want our defenders to make plays and they do," Stuart said. "They know to play together and have each other's backs because we have a high-risk, high reward style of play."
