Taussig, Kelly Power Tigers Past MIT

Box Score Colorado College utilized All-America level performances by senior midfielder Mary Taussig and junior attacker Steph Kelly to defeat MIT, 22-13, on Sunday afternoon at Stewart Field.
 
Taussig demonstrated her versatility by dominating the game virtually everywhere on the field. In addition to scoring five goals, she posted career highs of 10 draw controls and 10 ground balls, and caused three turnovers.
 
Kelly struck for six goals and dished out three assists, reaching a pair of milestones in the process. She also finished the game with eight ground balls and four draw controls.
 
With her first goal 11:12 into the game, Kelly became the fifth player in program history to record 200 or more points. She joined Mary Everett (252), Cassie Abel (236), Kelli Kessler (221) and Helen Sneath (208) in the exclusive club.
 
Kelly matches Sneath's fourth-place total of 208 points when she scored her final goal with 15 seconds remaining in the game.
 
The native of St. Louis became the first player in program history to record 100 career assists when she set up senior attacker Lily Benjamin's tally with 1:26 remaining in the first half.
 
The Tigers, who surpassed the 20-goal mark for the eighth time in 11 games, improved to 10-1 on the season.  
 
Sophomore attacker Cecelia McCormick gave the Engineers an early 1-0 lead and later pulled her team to with two goals when she struck for the second time with 8:07 to play before the break.
 
Taussig scored the first two markers of the second half to cap a 6-1 run that gave CC a measure of control with a 12-5 lead a little more than five minutes into the second half.
 
After senior midfielder Hannah Levy struck for back-to-back goals to trim MIT's deficit to five, the Tigers ran off five goals to open a 10-goal lead for the first time.
 
Levy struck for two goals and set up another as the Engineers used a 5-1 surge to pull to within 18-12, but Kelly scored three times during the final 5:14 and seniors Natalie Shishido and Benjamin combined for the game's final goal with two seconds to go.
 
Shishido finished with two goals and two assists, while senior midfielder Sadie Cole and junior attacker Annie DeFrino had two goals and set up another.
 
Colorado College launched 59 shots, compared to only 20 by MIT.
 
Freshman Remy Wells made three saves during the first half for CC, while junior Zoe Frolik stopped one shot during the final 30 minutes.
 
Only three players scored for the Engineers, but their efforts kept their team within striking distance.
 
Junior attacker Emily Young scored five goals and added a pair of assists for MIT. McCormick recorded four goals and three assists, while Levy had four goals and a pair of helpers.
 
Junior Eva Boal was brilliant in goal while making 20 saves for the Engineers.
 
The Tigers won 23 of 37 draw controls and finished with a 44-23 advantage in ground balls.
 
Colorado College plays host to Williams College in its final home game on Thursday at 6 p.m. on Washburn Field.
