The Colorado College women's tennis team snapped a two-match losing streak Thursday with an exciting 5-4 victory over Division II CSU-Pueblo in Pueblo, Colo.
Â
The Tigers took an early 2-1 lead after the doubles matches, with the Nos. 1 and 3 teams rallying from a 5-2 deficit to win. Freshmen
Jenna McDonald and
Caroline James pulled out the No. 1 match, 8-6, over Kaitlin Bos and Megan Moore, while senior
Maddie Cahill-Sanidas and sophomore
Madison Doerre defeated Kristin Jensen and Samantha Cachutt, 9-7, at No. 3.
Â
"We dug ourselves some huge holes in doubles," head coach
Anthony Weber said. "But we stormed back and both of the wins were huge for us."
Â
In singles, sophomore
Annie Zlevor avenged a three-set loss to Cachutt last fall with a dominating 6-3, 6-2 victory at the No. 4 spot, while Doerre went to a third set before downing Bos, 6-4, 5-7, 6-3 at No. 3. James won the first set, 6-1, against Acacia Dettman at the No. 2 position, but lost the last two sets, 6-3, 6-3 and CSU-Pueblo won the Nos. 5 and 6 matches in straight sets to even the match at 3-all.
Â
The deciding match came at the No. 1 spot between McDonald and Nia Matthews. Matthews won the first set, 6-3, but McDonald rallied to win the last two sets, each in a tiebreaker. She took the second-set breaker 7-3, then was dominant in the third-set tiebreak, winning it 7-1 and clinching the match for the Tigers.
Â
"We scrapped for every point in singles late into the night," Weber said. "It was a great atmosphere and a wonderful third-set breaker by Jenna. Madi (Doerre) had a big third set as well, playing really smart tennis."
Â
The Tigers (6-9) return to action on Saturday, April 15, against Division II Metro State in Denver, Colo., beginning at 10:00 a.m.
