Tigers Down Claremont in NCAA Tournament

Box Score Annie DeFrino and Mary Taussig each scored four goals and Remy Wells made nine saves to lead the Colorado College women's lacrosse team to a 15-12 victory over Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Sunday afternoon in the second round of the 2017 NCAA Division III Women's Lacrosse Championship.
 
The Tigers (15-4) advance to the regional semifinals for the second consecutive season and will face William Smith College. The Herons improved to 19-1 this season with a 15-1 victory over Westfield State on Sunday. The teams will play at 11:30 a.m. (ET), on Saturday, May 20 in Lexington, Va., on the campus of Washington and Lee, which plays Catholic in the other regional semifinal following CC's game..
 
Neither team held more than a one-goal lead at any point during the first half. DeFrino and Taussig scored with 1:23 and 1:10 remaining, respectively, in the half to give CC the lead for good at 7-6. Taussig's game-winner was the 150th goal of her career.
 
The Tigers jumped all over CMS to start the second half as Steph Kelly (1g,2a), Sadie Cole (3g,1a) and Taussig scored in the first 5:34 of the frame to take a 10-6 lead. Claremont (16-2) never got it closer than a three-goal margin the rest of the way.
 
Colorado College improved to 9-8 overall in the NCAA Tournament and snapped a six-game losing streak to Claremont, dating back to a 15-9 win in the 2007 NCAA Tournament. The Athenas entered Sunday's game with a 12-game winning streak, including a 15-11 victory over the Tigers on April 1, a game in which DeFrino recorded just one assist.
 
DeFrino made sure things were different on Sunday, adding an assist with her four goals for a five-point outing, while Taussig had two assists for a game-high six points. Eva King added a pair of second-half goals for Colorado College.
 
The Tigers outshot CMS, 32-28, with DeFrino attempting a team-high seven and Taussig and Cole with six apiece. Colorado College was a perfect 17-for-17 in clears and held an 18-11 advantage in draw controls.
 
Emily Cohen led the Athenas with four goals, while Corie Hack and Lauren Clubb each had three. Teresa Despres allowed 12 goals and made 11 saves before giving way to Sara Reid for the last eight minutes.
