Colorado College renews its rivalry with Claremont-Mudd-Scripps when the teams collide in the second round of the 2017 NCAA Division III Women's Lacrosse Championship on Sunday, May 14, in Claremont, Calif.
The Tigers received an at-large bid after completing the regular season with a 14-4 record.
CMS (16-1) also earned an an at-large berth after defeating Chapman University, 18-9, in the championship game of the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tournament.
The long-time rivals met on April 1, with the Athenas recording a 15-11 victory to take a 6-5 lead in the all-time series.
Claremont-Mudd-Scripps has not ventured to Colorado Springs since 2007 when CC prevailed 15-9 in the only previous NCAA Tournament encounter.
Since then, CMS has won six straight against Colorado College, the first five by only one goal.
The Tigers, who own an 8-8 all-time postseason record, advanced to the national semifinals in 2005, where they dropped a 15-11 decision to No. 1 Salisbury.
As a team, CC leads the nation averaging 18.61 draws controls per game and ranks second in scoring offense at 19.44 goals and 27.78 points.
Junior attackers
Steph Kelly and
Annie DeFrino lead Colorado College's dynamic attack. Kelly set the program's single-season highs with 104 points and 54 assists this season, while DeFrino set a new mark with 67 goals.Â
Senior midfielder
Mary Taussig has a team-high 51 ground balls and 38 caused turnovers. She also is second with 40 draw controls and fourth with 32 goals.
On the other side of the bracket, Castleton State College (12-6) and Westfield State University (13-5) will meet in Saturday's first round, with the winner facing off with William Smith College (18-1) on Sunday.
