Box Score Freshman goalkeeper
Alena Stern made 13 saves and senior defender
Cole Vanacore recorded a career-high four caused turnovers as Colorado College built a commanding six-goal lead and then hung for a 13-9 victory over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute on Sunday afternoon at Stewart Field.
CC improved to 4-2, while the Engineers slipped to 1-1-1
Stern stopped three free-position attempts and five others from point-blank range while recording double-digit saves for the third game in a row.
Her best sequence occurred a little more than five minutes into the second half when she denied back-to-back shots from the edge of the crease by RPI midfielders Becca De Rosa and Maddy Aslansan to maintain the Tigers' 7-4 lead.
Colorado College extended its lead to six with three consecutive goals, including a pair from senior attack
Annie DeFrino who finished with a game-high five tallies.
Junior midfielder Lauren Guiry and Aslansan each scored twice as the Engineers cut their deficit to 10-8 with 8:05 remaining, but the Tigers re-inserted their starters and order was restored.
Less than three minutes after returning, Stern turned aside a free-position shot off the stick of Aslansan, and then the CC tacked on a two more markers from DeFrino and another from sophomore midfielder
Lauren Pejza to extend its lead to 13-8 with only 1:26 remaining.
During the first half, senior attacker
Steph Kelly factored in five of Colorado College's six goals, scoring three and setting up two more. Kelly's score with 2:15 to play in the first half, which was set up by sophomore attacker
Allie Thuet's caused turnover, gave the Tigers a 6-3 lead after 30 minutes.
What made the CC defense's first-half performance even more impressive was the fact that yellow cards allowed RPI to play with two extra players on two occasions.
The Engineers took advantage of the first situation and grabbed their only lead of the game on Aslansan's free-position goal 50 seconds into the contest.
The advantage lasted just 42 seconds because sophomore attacker
Eva King leveled the score with a player-down marker, and then Kelly struck for the first time when she took a pass from
DeFrino and scored a slam-dunk goal from the left edge of the crease.
The second time Colorado College was down two players, Stern steered aside the only shot RPI managed to launch.
In addition to causing four turnovers, Vanacore led the Tigers with a season-high five ground balls.

Colorado College won 15 of 23 draw controls and finished with a 36-31 advantage in total shots.
Kelly recorded six draw controls, while Pejza and junior midfielder
Ellie Meyer produced three apiece.
CC's margin of victory would have been substantially greater had it not been for the stellar performance of RPI junior goaltender Aleena Milinski, who finished with 16 saves.
Junior attacker Shannon Amarello led the Engineers with four ground balls, while De Rosa grabbed a team-high four draw controls.
Colorado College returns to action on Friday against Mount Holyoke College at 10 a.m. MT.
