Box Score 2 Colorado College rolled a split on Sunday at Stewart Field, cruising to a 17-6 victory over Hamline University before falling to West Region rival Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, 14-9, in the second of back-to-back games.
Senior attackers
Steph Kelly and
Annie DeFrino combined for five goals and five assists to lead the Colorado College women's lacrosse team to a 17-6 victory over Hamline University.
Kelly led CC with three goals and three assists, and recorded five or more points for the sixth time in eight games. DeFrino scored twice and set up two other goals for Colorado College.
Sophomore midfielder Brayden Maass gave the Pipers the lead when she scored a free-position goal 2:03 into the contest, but back-to-back markers from Kelly, both of which were set up by DeFrino, put CC ahead to stay.
After tallies by freshman attacker
Isabelle Patalino and junior midfielder
Ellie Meyer gave the Tigers a 4-1 lead, sophomore midfielder Sydney Dynneson's free-position goal trimmed Hamline's deficit to two.
That, however, proved to be as close as the Pipers would get.
Sophomore attacker
Allie Thuet started and finished a nine-goal surge that extended Colorado College's lead to 13-2 with 7:33 remaining in the first half.
That proved to be the final margin of victory after the teams alternated scoring the final eight goals of the game.
CC won 20 of 25 draw controls and had a 35-18 advantage in ground balls.
The extra possessions resulted in a 45-13 margin in total shots.
Lauren Pejza led the Tigers with six ground balls. The sophomore midfielder also recorded five draw controls and a pair of caused turnovers.
Playing CMS in the second of back-to-back games proved to be too much for the Tigers to handle.
The Colorado College attack never found its top gear against the well-rested Athenas, who were looking to avenge last season's 15-12 loss to the Tigers in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Â
However, thanks to a stellar performance from freshman goaltender
Alena Stern, CC still was within striking with a little less than 13 minutes to play after DeFrino scored off of a pass from sophomore attacker
Eva King to pull the Tigers to within 12-9.
CMS regained the momentum when freshman midfielder Sally Abel scored with 2:39 to play and senior midfielder Evan Murphy added a free-position goal with just 20 seconds on the clock.
The Athenas opened a 7-4 lead after sophomore attacker Hannah Graves struck twice late in the first half, but sophomore attacker
Allie Thuet gave the Tigers a shot of adrenaline when she scored with four seconds on the clock.
Colorado College closed to within one when Kelly found the net 41 seconds into the second half, but CMS answered with five consecutive markers to open its largest lead of the game with 19:54 remaining.
Stern finished with a season-high 16 saves the Tigers, who slipped to 6-3.
Thuet lead CC with three goals, while Kelly and freshman midfielder
Caroline Keller added two apiece.
Murphy finished with a goal and five assists for the Athenas, who made their first trip to Colorado Springs since a 2007 NCAA Tournament game in which the Tigers prevailed, 15-9.
Freshman Anna Gillespie stopped seven shots for CMS after coming off the bench 17:28 into the game.
CC returns to action on Monday afternoon when it plays host to Oberlin College at 4 p.m.
