Steph Kelly and
Annie DeFrino combined for eight goals and four assists to lead Colorado College to a 14-11 victory at Illinois Wesleyan University on Friday afternoon at Tucci Stadium.
CC leveled its record at 1-1 and picked up an important win against a West Region opponent.
Defrino scored all four of her goals during the first half, including a pair in the opening 18:30 when the Tigers bolted to a 7-1 lead. Then, after junior midfielder Dani Engelbreit and junior attacker Claudia Richman scored for IWU, DeFrino answered both scores with another goal.
Colorado College stretched its advantage to 10-3 when sophomore midfielder
Avery Melville struck for the first of her two goals with 2:21 remaining in the first half, but senior attacker Abby Kushina ignited a four-goal burst by the Titans when she found the net 59 seconds before halftime.
The Titans utilized markers from first-year midfielder Riley Rooney, Kushina and Engelbreit to cut the deficit to 10-7 with 19:11 still to play.
After Kelly notched her third goal a little more than a minute later to give the Tigers a four-goal cushion, Richman and Engelbreit scored just 62 seconds apart to get Illinois Wesleyan to within two.
Sophomore attacker
Allie Thuet scored with 14:02 remaining and then Kelly struck again with 5:31 to go, stretching Colorado College's lead back to four.
Kushina's third goal trimmed IWU's deficit to 13-10, however sophomore attacker
Eva King answered for CC with 3:03 to go.
Rooney closed out the scoring with 32 seconds remaining, but it was too little, too late for the Titans.
The Tigers finished with a 30-19 advantage in ground balls and a 34-23 edge in total shots.
Freshman goalkeeper
Alena Stern made five saves in her first collegiate start to earn the victory in goal for Colorado College.
Stern and senior
Zoe Frolik, who played the first 14 minutes of the second half, held the Titans to seven goals below their season average of 18 entering the contest.
Cole Vanacore picked up a game-high six ground balls for CC.
First-year goalkeeper Janaye Godfrey turned in a superb performance in goal for the Titans, stopping 14 shots and giving her team the opportunity to mount a comeback.
IWU had allowed only 13 total goals during their first two games.
Engelbreit scored four goals for IWU, while Kushina added three.
Colorado College won't have much time to celebrate the victory. The Tigers are back in action on Saturday at 11 a.m. CT when they take on Rhodes College at Tucci Stadium.
