Tigers Make Statement Against Occidental

Box Score The Colorado College women's lacrosse team was on a mission against Occidental College on Saturday afternoon.

CC's orders were to make sure its seniors won their final regular-season game at Stewart Field and aimed to make sure everyone knew it was one of the top teams in the West Region.

Thanks to a decisive 23-13 victory over Occidental, it's safe to say mission accomplished.

Senior attacker Steph Kelly led Colorado College with five goals and six points.

Kelly's final goal at Stewart Field was a thing of beauty, taking a feed from sophomore attacker Rachel Sheridan and beating Occidental goaltender Neah Bois with a behind-the-back shot which gave CC a commanding 23-10 lead.

Sophomore midfielder Lauren Pejza's struck for a season-high three goals, including back-to-back tallies to cap a 7-0 run that put Colorado College in control at 11-4.

Senior midfielder Ciara Byrne, who led Oxy with a game-high six markers, scored twice during a 3-1 surge that cut her team's deficit to five, but CC closed out the first half with tallies by freshman midfielder Avery Bell and sophomore attacker Eva King to build a 14-7 lead after 30 minutes.

After Occidental's Allessandra Pellicia scored 57 seconds into the second half, it took Colorado College less than a minute to respond with makers from Pejza and junior midfielder Ellie Meyer to make the score 16-8.

Junior attacker Nikki Blair ignited a 5-0 run that extended CC's cushion to 23-10. Junior attacker Emily Carlson recorded a natural hat trick by scoring three times in a span 3:01 during that surge.

King finished with two goals and a pair of assists for Colorado College, which improved to 9-3.

Blair, Meyer and sophomore attacker Allie Thuet each scored twice and set up another goal for CC.

Despite missing the two previous games due to an injury, Kelly surpassed the 50-point mark for the third season in a row and now leads Colorado College with 52.

CC converted on eight of 14 free-position shots, while Occidental went 5-for-7.

Senior Zoe Frolik made four saves during 41:34 of action to earn the victory in goal. Freshman Alena Stern also stopped four shots.

Colorado College won 22 of 35 draw controls and finished with a 22-14 advantage in ground balls.

The extra possessions led to a 40-26 advantage in total shots.

Kelly produced a game-high 12 draw controls tied for the team lead with three ground balls.

Junior goaltender Neah Bois made 11 saves for Occidental, which slipped to 8-4.

Junior attacker Shai Goodman added three goals and a pair of assists for Oxy.

Colorado College begins a run of six consecutive road games next week when the Tigers travel to Southern California to face Pomona-Pitzer Colleges and Chapman University on Saturday and Sunday, respectively.
