Tigers Make Quick Work of Southwestern

Box Score Colorado College women's lacrosse team turned in a dominating performance in all phases of the game and rolled to a 24-6 victory at Southwestern University on Friday afternoon.

The Tigers struck for a season-high 24 goals, won 22 of 31 draw controls and the defense matched its second-fewest goals allowed this season. The end result was the team's largest margin of victory this year.

Senior attacker Steph Kelly produced a game-high five points on three goals and two assists to lead the CC offense. She also posted a game-high seven draw controls.

Eva King finished with three goals and an assist, and in the process became the 23rd player in program history to reach the 100-point mark. The sophomore attacker now has 101 career points in less than two full seasons.

Senior attacker Annie DeFrino scored twice and set up a pair of goals to eclipse the 50-point mark for the third consecutive season.

Five other Tigers struck for a pair of goals – juniors Nikki Blair and Ellie Meyer, sophomore Lauren Pejza and freshmen Avery Bell and Isabelle Patalino – to help their team reach the 20-goal mark for the fourth time this season.

Colorado College averaged nearly a goal per minute while racing to a 9-0 lead just 10:03 into the contest.

Meyer, who was a force all over the field, opened the floodgates when she scored on a free-position shot 20 seconds into the game. She added her second goal a little more than two minutes later.

King and Blair scored 21 seconds apart to give CC a 5-0 lead, and then Kelly, freshman midfielder Caroline Keller and junior attacker Emily Carlson each found the net in a span of 52 seconds.

A little more than two minutes after Bell made the score 9-0, Ronni Winter put the Pirates on the board with a free-position goal 12:22 into the game.

The Tigers added six more goals and built their largest lead of the first half when sophomore midfielder Avery Melville scored 4:55 before the break.

Colorado College scored nine goals in the second half and opened a 24-4 lead when Bell found the net with 5:16 to play.

Freshman goaltender Alena Stern stopped five shots during the first half and improved to 12-3. Senior Zoe Frolik made one save during the final 30 minutes.

Meyer led the defensive effort with three caused turnovers and also picked up a pair of ground balls.

Sophomore defender Cassis Schafer scooped up a team-high three ground balls for the Tigers, who improved to 13-4.

CC posted a 41-13 advantage in total shots and a 19-12 edge in ground balls.

Haley Donnelly finished with two goals and assist for Southwestern, which dropped to 5-11.

Haley Hurt made four saves during the first half, while Claire Harding stopped three shots during the final 30 minutes.

Colorado College plays its final game of the regular season on Saturday against Meredith College.
