Sophomore forward
Kiley Suter struck for the only goal of the game early in the second half and freshman goalkeeper
Abby Opperman came through with four clutch saves as the Colorado College women's soccer team defeated defending Mountain West champion San Jose State University, 1-0, on Friday night at Washburn Field.
Opperman's first save midway through the first half prevented the Spartans from getting on the scoreboard first.
After Jamilecxth Beccera, SJSU's leading scorer collected a long through ball from midfield and took a touch into the 18-yard box, Opperman charged off her line to challenge and use her body to block the shot. Junior defender
Tayla Wheeler cut off Jennifer Orozco's rebound shot from the left side and cleared the ball out of harm's way.
The score remained deadlocked until late in the 52nd minute.
Senior midfielder
Madeline Stesney intercepted a clearing attempt, moved to the central part of the field and passed to
Jenna Wilt. The junior midfielder sent a back-heal touch to Suter, who ripped a first-touch shot past SJSU keeper Ariana Romero inside the near post.
The goal proved to be the first game-winner of Suter's career, while Wilt has factored in four game winners this season, scoring one and setting up three others.
The Spartans took advantage of a 17 mph wind to dial up the pressure during the final 20 minutes, but they were unable to level the score thanks to the efforts of CC's defense, which recorded a clean sheet for the second game in a row and the third time this season.
Colorado College Standouts
Jacqui Hand and Suter each put two shots on target.
Wilt leads the Tigers with seven assists and 13 points.
Suter is tied for second with nine points and tied for third with a pair of goals.
San Jose State Standouts
Romero finished with three saves for the Spartans.
Sabrina Weinman launched a game-high five shots.
