Despite a dominating performance at both ends of the field by the Colorado College women's soccer team, a tough break in each half allowed Fresno State to escape Washburn Field with a 1-0 victory on Sunday afternoon.
The Tigers came out strong and were dangerous in the offensive third during the first 25 minutes, however they were unable to get the ball past Fresno State's Valentina Vivas, who played the first half in goal.
Vivas denied CC's
Jacqui Hand twice in a span of three minutes from the center of the box, then lunged to her right to steer away
Catie McDonald's crossing shot from the edge of the box.
The Bulldogs got the break they needed early in the 34th minute when Robyn McCarthy played the ball into the box, and a first-touch clearing attempt by a Colorado College defender went into the net. Â Â Â Â
The Tigers came within inches of leveling the score in the 67th minute, but goalkeeper Milena Zink, who came on for the Bulldogs at halftime, got enough of her fingertips on a shot by
Abby Hubbard to deflect the ball over the crossbar.
CC was denied another opportunity to tie the game with a little more than 10 minutes to play when Hand was taken down from behind in the box by a pair of Bulldog defenders while lining up a shot from eight yards out. The Tigers nearly scored when McDonald chased down the loose ball on the left side of the box, but her crossing shot went wide of the far post.
Fresno State played virtually everyone back in the closing minutes and Colorado College could only generate a pair of corner kicks and two shots that did not make it through to Zink.
The Tigers slipped to 6-2 overall and 1-1 in the Mountain West.
