The Colorado College women's soccer team passed its stiffest test of the season with flying colors on Sunday, defeating Western Michigan University, 3-1, in a physical contest at Washburn Field.
CC improved to 4-0, marking the first time since 2005 a Tiger squad began a season with four consecutive victories.
Colorado College broke through late in the 26th minute when
Jenna Wilt scored from 35 yards out after picking up a loose ball in the midfield. Her shot from distance went just under the crossbar and off the outstretched hands of Bronco goalkeeper Maggie Rogers.
The celebration lasted just over a minute because WMU scored on defender Rachel Royal's header from the edge of the six off Grace Labadie's corner kick from the right side. Â
Lucia Costanza struck for what proved to be the second game-winning goal of her career seven minutes into the second half, collecting Wilt's pass on a run on the right side and putting a high crossing shot from the edge of the box past goaltender Hannah Sargent.
CC added an insurance goal in the 68th minute.
Kiley Suter laid the ball off to
Tayla Wheeler along the right sideline, and Wheeler lofted a long shot that went off Sargent's fingertips and into the net.
Despite absorbing a pair of massive hits on set pieces, Colorado College goalkeeper
Abby Opperman stopped four shots and improved to 3-0-0 on the season.
The Tigers finished the contest with a 21-10 advantage in total shots and an 8-6 edge in corner kicks.
Â
Key Moment
Opperman was tested a little more than five minutes into the game on a high shot from WMU's Savannah Bosworth, but the first-year goalkeeper sprang to her left and was able to punch the high shot over the crossbar. Â Â Â Â
