Colorado College won its fourth consecutive Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference women's lacrosse championship with a 24-8 victory over Southwestern University on a picture-perfect Sunday afternoon at Washburn Field.
Sophomore midfielder
Caroline Shay, the championship's Offensive MVP, struck for a season-high six goals, including four in the first half to help the Tigers take control of the game.
Shay's second goal with 16 seconds remaining in the first quarter gave CC a 7-5 lead, and after Raven Garcia got one back for the Pirates 1:25 into the second quarter, Shay scored twice to ignite a 6-0 surge that put the Tigers ahead, 12-5, after 30 minutes.
Emma Pertuit struck for the last of her three goals 45 seconds into the third quarter to give Southwestern a momentary boost, but Shay produced the next two markers to start a four-goal burst that gave the Tigers their first double-digit lead at 16-6. Â Â
In all, 14 different players scored at least once to help Colorado College reach the 20-goal mark for the fifth time this season.
Tobin Lonergan,
Peyton Murphy,
Delia Freliech and
Olivia Dossett each produced two goals and an assist, while
Annie Tucker scored twice to give the Tigers six players with two or more tallies.
Lonergan finished the game with 59 points, which ranks 22nd on the program's single-season list, and 41 goals, which ties her for 24th.
Maggie O'Donnell,
Bella Beattie and
Bella Scola recorded two assists apiece for the Tigers.
O'Donnell climbed into third place with 79 career assists and 17th place with 135 points. Â Â
Abigail Turner, the game's Defensive MVP, caused one turnover and anchored the CC defense that limited the Pirates to less than half of their season average of 16.07 goals per game.
The Tigers caused 15 turnovers and held Southwestern to less than 50 percent (11-for-24) on its clearing opportunities.
Colorado College finished with a 41-15 advantage in total shots and a 37-12 margin in shots on goal.
The Tigers won 21 of 36 draw controls and finished with a 29-20 edge in ground balls.

Natalie Slade stopped four saves in just under 40 minutes.
Tessa Lewis made 11 saves for the Pirates before giving way to Sofia Valdespino with 3:35 remaining in the game.
Emma Pertuit led Southwestern with three goals, while Raven Garcia finished with two goals and a pair of assists.
The Tigers improved to 6-0 overall all time in the SCAC Tournament and 4-0 in championship games.
All told, Colorado College is 9-0 all-time against the Pirates, which includes a 4-0 mark in games played in Colorado Springs.
