Four Tigers Named United Soccer Coaches Academic All-Americans

The Colorado College men's soccer team had four student-athletes named Academic All-Americans by United Soccer Coaches, announced on Thursday. Dec. 19.

"I am so pleased for these players to be recognized for their outstanding achievements on the field and in the classroom," head coach Scott Palguta said. "Their level of commitment towards everything they do is outstanding, so I am so happy to see their hard work and consistency rewarded."

Senior Curtis Hale earned first-team honors, and Alexander Ward, Will Bavier, and junior Rex Karjian were named second-team selections. CC had the most selections of any team in all of NCAA DIII.

Hale was named a College Sports Communicators Academic All-American a couple of weeks ago and now adds this honor to his illustrious resume. The Richmond, Virginia native carries a 3.79 GPA and will graduate from CC with a major in Mathematical Economics. Hale was also named a United Soccer Coaches All-American, winning his third-straight Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Player of the Year to cap his CC career.

Bavier carries a 3.81 GPA and will graduate with a degree in International Political Economics. The Cambridge, Mass. native earned All-Region and First-Team All-SCAC recognition in his final season as a Tiger. He finished the year with 22 matches started and was fourth on the team with 1,468 minutes. He dished six points (2g, 2a) and played a key role in leading the Tiger midfield.

Ward also earned his first Academic All-American honor following his All-SCAC and All-Region season. Spud carries a 3.83 GPA and will graduate with a degree in Mathematical Economics. The Portland native tied for second on the team with 15 points (6g, 3a). Ward took 45 shots (23 on goal), the second most in a season. He earned All-SCAC First Team honors earlier this year for the first time in his tenure.

Karjian got his first academic All-American nod with a 3.86 GPA and a major in Political Science. The Seattle, Wash. native finished the season with 1,616 minutes played and was first on the team and in the conference with 10 assists. He also racked up a goal and 11 shots.

All four players helped lead the Tigers to their second-straight NCAA Tournament appearance, and CC hosted for the first time since 1997. The program finished the season with a 16-3-3 record and a SCAC regular season title.
