Tigers Prepare For WIAC Tournament As No. 1 Seed

After capturing the regular season title last week, the Colorado College women's lacrosse team will attempt to win the first Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament this weekend in River Falls, WI.

As the No. 1 seed, the Tigers enter the tournament with a formidable 12-5 record. They clinched the regular season title last weekend, dominating UW Stevens Point with a 22-2 victory to secure a perfect 6-0 record in WIAC play.

Last Time Out

CC closed out the regular season with a 2-0 weekend in Wisconsin and claimed their first conference title since 2022. The Tigers downed UW River Falls 20-1 on Friday and finished with another 20-point win over UW Stevens Point on Saturday.

The Tigers' defensive strength was evident in their last games. They allowed their opponents a mere three goals from 15 total shots while their offensive line was on fire, scoring 42 goals from 73 shots.

From the gate in each game, it was all CC. It racked up a combined 15 goals in the first quarter while holding their adversaries to a goose egg. Against the Falcons, the Tiger defense didn't allow a goal until the fourth quarter, and then against the Pointers, CC didn't surrender a goal until the six-minute mark of the third.

Six Tigers finished with multiple goals against River Falls, led by Kendall Havill, Charlotte Iler, and Healy Bledsoe, who each had three. It was a career-high for Bledsoe as she finished the weekend with four goals.

Havill followed up her own three-goal game with five more on Saturday against the Pointers.

Have A Year, Havill

The senior captain will close out her CC career as a record holder in many regards. She already has the record for most goals in a single game (nine), but she set another program mark this last weekend in Wisconsin. With her five scores against UW Stevens Point, Havill surpassed Annie DeFrino (2017) with 76 goals in a season, the most in program history.

Havill enters the weekend in her senior campaign with 95 points, 76 goals, 19 assists, 99 shots on goals, four game-winning goals, 31 ground balls and 16 caused turnovers. She is well on her way to her second-consecutive All-American selection after racking up four WIAC Offensive Player of the Week honors this season.

She leads the conference in goals, points, and shots. Against the nation, Havill is 12th among all NCAA DIII players in goals.

Success In The WIAC

The Tigers excelled in their first year within the WIAC and enter the first conference tournament as the top-seeded team. Against conference opponents, CC is 6-0 and outscored the field 127-14 over the six games.

CC attained nine 20-goal games this season, six of which came within the WIAC. The Tigers rank first in the conference in scoring offense, scoring defense, goals, assists, points, draw controls and shot percentage.

Havill ranks first in the WIAC in points and goals.

The Grand Scheme

All around, the Tigers are having one of the best seasons of the last decade. Head coach Susan Stuart is in her 30th season as the Tigers' head honcho. In her illustrious career, Stuey has reached 12 wins in a season 12 times; the last was back in 2019 when CC finished 18-2, the year of their last NCAA Tournament appearance.

This is the first year for women's lacrosse in the WIAC, and the conference tournament winner does not get an automatic NCAA Tournament bid, so a title this weekend does not confirm the continuation of the Tigers' season.

CC is currently receiving votes in the IWLCA DIII national polls and was ranked for three consecutive weeks as high as No. 24.

The NCAA DIII women's lacrosse national tournament will have 48 potential spots, with 34 automatic qualifying spots going to conference champions. CC will have an opportunity to get one of the remaining 14 at-large bids.

The national selection show is scheduled for Monday, May 6th at 8:30 a.m. MT.

Scouting The Opposition

UW-Eau Claire is the No. 4 seed in the tournament and enters the weekend with an 11-4 (3-3 WIAC) record. The Blugolds are the third-best scoring offense in the conference, averaging 15.27 goals per game.

Defensively, Eau Claire has the second-best goals-against average behind Colorado College. Goalkeeper Alexandria Shae has logged 900 minutes in the cage and surrenders only 9.93 goals per game.  Shae also has the fourth-best saves percentage (.446) in the conference.

Reegan Werner is the Blugolds' best offensive player, averaging 2.80 goals per game, and Lily Zygowicz is the WIAC leader in assists per game with 3.27.

The last time the Tigers and Blugolds squared off, CC ran away with a 20-4 win in the WIAC opener. The winner of Friday's matchup will play the winner of the other semifinal game between UW-River Falls and UW-La Crosse.

Saturday's championship game is set for 7:30 p.m. CT.
