Tigers Earn Bid to First NCAA Tournament Since 1986

The 24th-ranked Colorado College women's tennis team will make the program's second appearance in the NCAA Division III Championships on Friday, May 8, when the Tigers travel to Claremont, Calif., to face No. 19 Pomona-Pitzer.

The Tigers (20-3) earned an automatic berth to the tournament by winning the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference title last Sunday. This will be their first national tournament appearance since 1986.

Colorado College rolled through the SCAC schedule this season without losing a team point in all 12 matches against league opponents, including a 4-0 victory over Concordia University in the conference final on April 26.

Pomona-Pitzer (10-8) earned an at-large bid after falling to No. 2-ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, 5-0, in the SCIAC final on Sunday.

Friday's winner faces either Claremont (23-1), who will face the winner of the first-round match between Whitman (18-5) and Mary Hardin Baylor (12-5), in the third round on Saturday to advance to the national quarterfinals.

"This squad has come up big over and over this spring," head coach Anthony Weber said. "We can't be more excited to test some of the most storied programs in the country, and continue to increase the profile of this program."

The contest against Pomona-Pitzer will be CC's fourth of the season against an opponent ranked in the ITA Division III poll. Earlier this year, the Tigers played No. 12 Trinity University, No. 22 Wellesley College and No. 31 Cal Tech, going 2-1 in those matches.

Colorado College finished fourth in its appearance in the 1986 National Tournament in Kalamazoo, Mich. The Tigers lost to Occidental, 8-1, in the semifinals and 5-4 to Kalamazoo in the third-place match.
