Tigers stun OU in season opener

Beans strikes just 27 seconds into 3-1 victory

Gift wrapping Geoff Bennett's pre-game wish, Colorado College started the season with a bang on Friday.

Junior forward Emily Beans scored just 27 seconds into the game, igniting a 3-1 Tigers victory over the University of Oklahoma in their 2008 opener at CC's Stewart Field and giving their head coach exactly what he was hoping for.

“For not having played any scrimmages, I'm really happy with the intensity we showed today,” Bennett said after watching his team dominate territorially and outshoot the visiting Sooners by a 16-3 margin. “It's the first time in a while that we've played as a complete team, and it's nice to see everything we've been doing in practice translate into a game. Oklahoma is a good team, and is going to win a lot of games, so we're very pleased with today's result.”

Although OU would tie the contest on a nicely deflected header by Kelsey Kraft at 11:52, the unassisted goal by Beans in the opening half minute set the tone on this hot, clear and occasionally breezy afternoon. Sooners keeper Lisa Jett got a piece of the low shot from about 20 yards out after Beans used her speed to get open on the left side, but the ball rolled past her and into the right corner of the net.

Sophomore forward Sydney Fetter struck for the game winner just 13 minutes after Oklahoma tied the score, sneaking in behind the defense on a nifty passing play by Kelsey Wise and Alexa Bannerman. Colorado College added an insurance tally early in the second half when the Sooners inadvertently headed Tiffany Brown's corner kick past Jett, who finished with seven saves.

“I'm very happy with where our attitude is at,” Bennett said. “Now we just need to keep it going in a positive direction.”

The Tigers, who play host to Valparaiso University and Idaho State next weekend, won their home opener for the fourth consecutive year.
