Special teams continued to shine on Friday and helped Colorado College open its holiday weekend with a bang.
Propelled by a shorthanded goal and two more on a power play that ranks first in the nation, CC skated to a very workmanlike 5-0 victory over the University of Alaska Anchorage in the first of two meetings at the World Arena.
The Tigers, who extended their winning streak to six consecutive games, improved to 10-2-1 overall and 7-1-1 in WCHA play. They remain tied with the University of Denver, which defeated St. Cloud State by a 5-3 count on Friday, for first place in the league standings.
Freshman winger
William Rapuzzi scored twice in the triumph, while rookie goaltender
Joe Howe made 24 saves to record his second shutout of the season.
Defensemen
Kris Fredheim and Ryan Lowery each contributed a goal and an assist. Junior winger
Stephen Schultz helped set up the tallies by Fredheim and Lowery, both on the power play. Senior right wing and team captain
Mike Testwuide struck for his seventh red lighter of the campaign, on a shorthanded odd-man rush with
Nick Dineen, to take the wind out of UAA's sails at 11:23 of the second period.
Testwuide struck during one of six Seawolves power plays in the contest. The first two came in the opening period, when CC's
Brian McMillin and
Matt Overman were banished to the sin bin just 45 seconds apart with Colorado College holding a 1-0 lead.
The Tigers killed the five-on-three, and as Overman returned to the ice, McMillin hit him with a clearing pass in the neutral zone. Overman cut in from the right side, was stopped by UAA goalie Bryce Christianson, but retrieved the puck in the left corner and centered it into the slot area. Rapuzzi, with an assist from
Addison DeBoer, picked it up and beat Christianson to make it 2-0. DeBoer also helped set up Rapuzzi's second goal which completed the scoring at 7:50 of the final frame.
