Tigers fall to UND in overtime

Regular-season finale with Denver looms large

After seeing a courageous effort go for naught, Colorado College now waits another week to try and clinch home ice for the opening round of the WCHA playoffs.

Darcy Zajak scored at 3:35 of overtime on Sunday, lifting the University of North Dakota to a 4-3 sudden-death victory over the Tigers in the second game of their weekend series at Engelstad Arena.

The triumph vaulted UND past the University of Denver and into first place in the league standings. The Fighting Sioux play twice at Wisconsin next weekend while Denver entertains CC in a single contest at DU's Magness Arena on Saturday.

While a WCHA title may be at stake for the Pioneers, that regular-season finale with its archrival could mean the difference between third and seventh place for Colorado College, now 16-10-9 overall and 12-9-6 in conference play.

The Tigers battled back from 2-0 and 3-2 deficits on Sunday, pulling even for the last time on Chad Rau's dramatic goal with 4:36 left in regulation. They were awarded a power play with 10 seconds remaining in the third period, and would have won at the buzzer were it not for a sprawling save by UND net minder Brad Eidsness.

Zajak converted on a rebound after CC goaltender Richard Bachman stopped a shot from the left circle by Brad Malone on a North Dakota counter rush following a Tiger turnover in their offensive end. The tally snapped a six-game (3-0-3) unbeaten streak for Colorado College, its second longest of the season.

Power-play goals by Scott McCulloch and Cody Lampl just 2:18 apart early in the second period knotted the score at 2-2 after the Fighting Sioux struck twice in the opening frame. UND's second red lighter, by Ryan Duncan, came during a 5-on-3 power play late in the stanza.

Eric Walsky had a pair of assists for the Tigers, while Bachman finished with 21 saves. Eidsness steered away 22 shots at the other end. Andrew Kozek and Brett Hextall also scored for North Dakota.
