Tom Preissing is coming home.
Well, sort of.
Preissing, who grew up in Rosemount, Minn., before enjoying a glittering four-year career as a defenseman for the Tigers earlier this decade, was traded to the Colorado Avalanche on Friday after spending the last two seasons with the NHL's Los Angeles Kings.
The Kings received forward Ryan Smyth in exchange for Preissing, fellow defenseman Kyle Quincey and a 2010 draft pick.
Colorado is the fourth NHL team for The 30-year-old Preissing, who earned All-America honors and was a top-10 Hobey Baker Award finalist as a senior at CC in 2002-03. Also the team captain that campaign, he scored 23 goals to establish a school single-season record for a defenseman. That mark still stands.
He graduated with 126 points (39g,87a) in 154 career games during his collegiate career.
In 322 NHL appearances since then, Preissing has collected 131 points (31g,100a) combined with for LA, the Ottawa Senators and San Jose Sharks. He played in only 22 games with the Kings in 2008-09, however, scoring three goals and adding four assists.
