No lucky seven for Tigers

CC blanked 3-0 in series finale with Nebraska Omaha

Winning seven games in a row proved too tall an order for Colorado College on Sunday.

The Tigers, who last accomplished the feat more than 12 years ago to start their first full season at the new World Arena, came up empty in a 3-0 home-ice loss to the University of Nebraska Omaha.

With the defeat, CC saw its victory streak end at six and squandered an opportunity to climb past the fourth-place Mavericks in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association standings.

Now 11-8-1 overall and 8-6 in league play, Colorado College remains fifth in the WCHA heading into the holiday break. The Tigers are off until Dec. 29, when they'll meet Michigan State University in the opening round of the Great Lakes Invitational at Joe Louis Arena in Detroit, Mich. Their next conference action won't take place until they play at the University of Alaska Anchorage in mid-January.

Nebraska Omaha finished with a 41-24 advantage in shots on goal Sunday while bouncing back to earn a split of the first WCHA series ever between the teams.

The Mavericks got a 24-save performance from sophomore netminder John Faulkner, who recorded his fourth shutout of the season, and solo tallies off the sticks of Matt White, Rich Purslow and Brock Montpetit. The visitors improved to 12-5-1 overall and 9-4-1 in the WCHA, pulling to within a point of second-place Denver and Minnesota Duluth.

White, a freshman, snapped a scoreless tie late in the first period on clear-cut breakaway set up by linemate Alex Hudson's sprawling defensive play at his own blue line.

CC's Tyler Johnson came within inches of evening the count with 8:26 left in the middle frame, but his wrist shot from the slot banged off the cross bar behind Faulkner. That probably was Colorado College's best chance of the night.

Purslow and Montpetit struck at 5:44 and 10:25 of the third period to add some insurance.

Sophomore goaltender Joe Howe made a season-high 38 saves for the Tigers.
