Luetjen reaches milestone as CC beats Sewanee

Becky Luetjen became the 16th player in Colorado College history to record 500 career rebounds and CC re-claimed a share of first place in the Western Division of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference with a 73-55 victory over Sewanee on Sunday afternoon.

Luetjen reached the milestone with just under eight minutes remaining in the first half and set a career high with 18 to move past Lolita Curtis into 15th place with 512. She added 14 points to complete her sixth double-double of the season.

Hannah Hoopingarner posted her first double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds. She grabbed three offensive rebounds on one possession in the first half and had a career-high 11 at the break.

Alyssa Aldaz scored seven of her season-high 19 points to help Colorado College jump out to a 19-4 lead 6:51 into the game. After Paige Lowe dropped in a three-pointer to cut Sewanee's deficit to 10 points with 8:59 to go, CC went on a 11-3 run to build its biggest lead of the half at 30-12.

Dani Kabbes sank a pair of free throws with 3:11 to go to pull Sewanee to within 30-20, but Colorado College scored the next four points on free throws to build 14-point lead after 20 minutes.

CC led by 29 points midway through the second half, but Dana Middleton erupted for nine of her team-leading 17 points to fuel a 23-4 run that allowed Sewanee to pull to within 10 points with 3:40 to remaining.

That, however, proved to be as close as the visitors would get. Aldaz knocked down her third shot from three-point range and hit a jumper with 1:59 to play that returned Colorado College's lead to 17 points.

Claire Elliott finished with 14 points for Sewanee, while Kabbes scored 11 and grabbed a team-high nine rebounds.

Colorado College tied its season high with 61 rebounds, but committed 25 turnovers.

CC improved to 5-4 in the SCAC and 8-10 overall. Sewanee dropped to 2-14 overall and 0-9 in the conference.

Colorado College travels to DePauw University and Centre College next Friday and Sunday, respectively.
